2011 Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association Annual Members Dinner - May 20, 2011
"Dinner at the Waldorf" is the theme of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association 2011 Spring Annual Dinner.
The Waldorf Astoria exhibit at the Hoover Library-Museum depicts a living room with a desk surrounded by china cabinets full of a collection of blue and whites. It has a way of giving some the impression that President Hoover retired and rested after his busy public life. However, that is very far from the truth. In fact, Mr. Hoover had five to seven secretaries and/or research assistants working for him at any given time, up until the time of his passing at age 90. The staff was hired by Bernice "Bunny" Miller who started working for the Hoovers as a personal secretary to Lou Henry Hoover in 1935. This spring, we are fortunate to have as special guests at our Annual Dinner four Hoover secretaries; C.Y. (Fay) Wilder, Jane (Randall) Barry, Maureen D'Honau and Mary Lou Scanlon.
These ladies worked for Mr. Hoover in 31-A at the Waldorf Towers at different times from 1957 until 1964. Only Maureen D'Honau and Mary Lou Scanlon knew each other and were there at the same time. They all felt their work with "the Chief" (this is the name they called President Hoover) was a "once in a lifetime" opportunity and one of the highlights of their lives.
The public is cordially invited to a “Dinner at the Waldorf” where these four special ladies will share memories of their time with President Hoover at the Waldorf Astoria.
