Day 6 – March 3 – FridayThis morning, spend the day in Palo Alto, home of Stanford University. On October 1, 1891, the university opened its doors after six years of planning and building. The first student body consisted of 555 men and women, including one Herbert Hoover, and the original faculty of 15 was expanded to 49 for the second year. The Stanford Family engaged Frederick Law Olmsted, the famed landscape architect who created New York's Central Park, to design the physical plan for the university. The collaboration was contentious, but finally resulted in an organization of quadrangles on an east-west axis. Today, as Stanford continues to expand, the university's architects attempt to respect those original university plans. We will tour the Hoover Institution and Tower. Depending upon time, art enthusiasts may enjoy touring the galleries at the Cantor Arts Center and the Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery, strolling through the Rodin Sculpture Garden, visiting the student art gallery or walking around campus to view our 42 freestanding outdoor sculptures. Lunch is at your leisure. Dinner tonight will be on the bustling University Avenue at Evvia Estoria – an upscale delightful Greek restaurant.
